A Visit to Jeroen Markies Art Deco

We visited Jeroen Markies and his son Jacob, at their East Sussex showroom in Forest Row, Jeroen Markies Art Deco.

In these four shorts we explore different aspects of the business and take a look at some of the stock highlights on display.

 

In this clip Jeroen talks us through his particular love for English Art Deco furniture and shows us some of his pieces by English designer Betty Joel. His son Jacob explores her career and Jeroen tells us about the joys and complexities of running a family antiques business through Covid-19 and Brexit.

Jeroen talks shows us some of his vintage general post office (GPO) telephones.

The GPO was the main provider of telephone handsets as well as lines right up until 1980s. Jeroen Markies shows us examples from the 1930s to the 1970s made from bakelite or plastic depending on age.

Here, Jeroen explains the differences between the Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles as well as showing some that came before them through the different styles of bronze sculpture in his showroom.

We also explore some of his collection of glassware including pieces by René Lalique, Costabelle as well as unknown makers.

Back to art deco furniture and English designers. In this clip we look at two bars by designers Epstein Brothers and Hille respectively.

Purpose built bar furniture was a relatively new concept at the time as the popularity of cocktails was increasing but now they are ever more popular.
